SUMMARY:
Information systems professional with 13 years of hands-on experience as a
technical manager, network systems architect/engineer, and shrink wrapped
software developer. Manages a staff of 12, responsible for the daily
administration, planning, hardware expansion, and 24 hour on call
support of a 1,250 workstation, hybrid Token Ring/Ethernet LAN which runs
in-house developed applications, designed to refresh the information content
on the Prodigy Service.
MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
Management
- Direct a 12 person staff of LAN Administration, Workstation
Support, Host Connectivity, and Applications Support specialists
handling average 450 calls per month. Responsible for a budget of
2.3 million dollars encompassing all of Prodigy's desktop systems.
- Managed 8 person microcomputer support organization supported
systems and applications in 150 remote sites.
- Managed 10 person programming staff in a multiplatform, microcomputer
environment responsible for shrink wrapped applications for a user
community in excess of 100,000. Call volume of 550 calls per week.
- Turned a reactive support organization, into a pro-active one and
improved system availability from less than 65% to 99.6%.
- Formulated and implemented microcomputer use and support policy including
definition of departmental structure.
- Exercised complete control and selection of microcomputer software and
hardware world-wide for a user community in excess of 3,000.
- Hired and trained Programming, Support, Documentation, and Production
staff.
Software Development
- 14 years of hands-on programming experience using 8086 Assembler, all
dialects of BASIC, C, xBase, Pick DataBasic.
- System architect, connectivity specialist, and programmer of console
system for Prodigy Service on-line Baseball Manager game. User base of
4,000.
- Programmed plethora of monitor and control programs using NetWare API
calls for use on Prodigy's mission critical LAN.
- Programmed commercial electronic mail package, menu and file management
system, and network monitor program for NetWare server platform.
- Wrote and documented complete line of small business accounting packages
with user base in excess of 100,000.
- Wrote MERCURY, a VAX - NetWare Bridge to connect Accuweather VAX located
in Philadelphia, to the Prodigy LAN in White Plains using Visual
Basic/DOS.
- Programmed custom applications for Aviation Claims, Specialty Rating, MIS
Cost Allocation and Chargebacks, Legal Department Filing System, and
Microsystems Configuration and Purchasing System.
- Authored WORKBENCH, an in-house developed multi-user agency management
system providing client and prospect database, claims tracking,
budgeting, marketing, and production information. Designed as an
integrated package to provide database, word processing, graphics,
communications, and spreadsheet to all Hall offices with a consistent
user interface.
Network Architect and Engineer
- Involved with PC LAN/WAN technology since 1984 (Tallgrass and 10Net)
- Certified NetWare Engineer since 1989.
- Designed and implemented network solutions for The White House, The
Pentagon, DIA, NBC, Frank B. Hall, and Prodigy.
- Expanded Prodigy LAN from two floors of UTP Ethernet, to 13 floors of
Ethernet/Token Ring connected via 16 MB/s Token Ring building backbones
using IBM bridges and NetWare routers.
- Designed and implemented LAN Disaster Recovery Plan to allow 100% network
recovery within minutes utilizing various in-house written
synchronization programs and other techniques like "stereo writes" to our
main databases.
- Designed and implemented WAN attachments using NetWare Asynchronous
Bridges to give Prodigy External Providers (e.g. The LA Times, Consumers
Union, WGBH) a remote upload facility to the Prodigy Service, and T1 IBM
Split Bridge technology to our data center in Yorktown Heights.
- Responsible for Local Area Network installations from cable planning and
installation through file server GEN and end-user training.
- Formulated NBC Telecommunications NetWare Conventions documentation and
applied techniques successfully to LANs in NBC News, Sports, TV Networks,
and MIS Administration.
- Was responsible for planning, installation, and maintenance of NBCs
Rockefeller Center, Paramount Plaza, Briarcliff Manor Data Center, and
Tarrytown Center wide area network components including IBM Token Ring
Bridges.
- Tested and certified new hardware and software products as "Tapestry
Compatible".
